My name is Emily Stewart, and I studied Arabic and International Studies at the University of Mississippi. I first studied Arabic because I wanted to attend law school and become an immigration attorney. I saw it as a path to helping people while learning more about international studies and other cultures. Currently, I still want to work with immigrants, but through an organization that facilitates immigrant and refugee resettlement in the United States. My experience learning Arabic has taught me how much I enjoy working one-on-one with individuals and how important human connection is in a future job. Learning Arabic on my own would have been a very daunting experience, but studying through the Flagship at Ole Miss, I could focus on dedicating my time to learning the language while my teachers and administers worked behind the scenes to offer me the best resources whether it be class material or study abroad programs. Through the Flagship, I have been supported on multiple study abroad trips in ways that were instrumental to their success. I saw my peers, who studied abroad without the support of Flagship, struggle because of the lack of financial and educational support.
