Funding for the Arabic Flagship

The Arabic Overseas Flagship Program offers financial support to Capstone students. This support is aimed at helping students complete their final year of intensive language study and cultural immersion abroad. The financial support can cover a variety of expenses, including tuition and fees, airfare, housing, meals, and a living stipend. Students enrolled in the Arabic Flagship program are also highly encouraged to apply for additional funding opportunities from their universities and other sources such as the Boren Scholarship, Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship, and the Foreign Language and Areas Studies (FLAS) Fellowship.

1) Boren Scholarship: 

  • The Boren Scholarship can provide funds up to $25,000 to undergraduate students who study languages considered essential for U.S. national security by the federal government, including Arabic.
  • Scholars must commit to working in the U.S. federal government for at least one year.
  • Preferred candidates are those who have an interest in working in the federal government long-term. 
  • Undergraduate applications are due February 1, 2023 at 5pm ET.

2) Gilman Scholarship: 

  • Applicants who are studying a critical need language while abroad can apply for a supplemental award of up to $8,000.
  • Students must be receiving a Federal Pell Grant during the time of application or provide proof that they will be receiving a Pell Grant during the term of their study abroad program.
  • Undergraduate applications are due March 9, 2023 at 11:59 PT.

3) Foreign Language and Area Studies (FLAS) Fellowship:

  • The Summer FLAS Fellowship provides up to $5,000 in tuition and fees and a $3,500 stipend to undergraduate students for intensive language training in the U.S. or abroad.
  • During the academic year, FLAS Fellowship provides up to  $10,000 in tuition and fees and a $5,000 stipend to undergraduate students at applicable universities. 
  • Applications for both Summer 2023 and 2023-2024 academic year FLAS competitions are due February 22, 2023.

Where can I find funding? 

Fortunately, there are numerous opportunities to receive grants and scholarships to cover the expenses of the capstone experience. Below are common sources of funding with the maximum amount they offer for a year-long program. Follow the link for each grant or scholarship for the most up-to-date information.

 The BYU Flagship Center applies each year for student support funding from The Language Flagship.  While we encourage (and sometimes require) students to apply for funding through these sources, more opportunities are likely available to individual students based on their field of study and career aspirations. The Arabic Flagship Program provides scholarship and other funding opportunities to offset the cost of your domestic summer study, summer study abroad, and Capstone year. While not guaranteed, scholarships can cover much of the cost of your study abroad experiences. Flagship funding applies only to these programs and cannot be applied to the cost of the Arabic Flagship throughout the academic year on IU Bloomington’s campus. 

Other Funding Opportunities:

Much of the Flagship experience takes place on the IU Bloomington campus during the regular academic year and includes both credit-bearing classes and free extracurricular activities. Although no funding is provided from the Flagship program for academic years on campus, students are encouraged to apply for the wide variety of scholarships and financial aid available through IU and other sources to help fund both their academic years and summer study. 

Flagship students who are also ROTC cadets may be eligible for additional funding opportunities through partnerships between the Defense Language and National Security Education Office (DLNSEO), Army Cadet Command, and Air Force ROTC. The Capstone year abroad costs around $24,000 (this includes tuition, fees, housing, utilities, and estimated meals, transportation, and stipend). 

All UA Flagship students are able to receive a tuition scholarship from the UA scholarship office. These funds are only applied to tuition and will not disburse to students as a stipend.

  • Up to $4,000 for their summer abroad
  • Up to $8,000 for their Capstone year abroad, paid in two instalments in Fall/Spring semesters

Flagship students are also eligible to apply for scholarships (if approved for one of these scholarships, student Flagship amounts may change)

  • Boren (up to $25,000. Requires a year of government service after graduation)
  • Gilman (up to $8,000. Requires Pell Grant)
  • FLAS (up to $10,000 for tuition and $5000 stipend for the academic year) 

Arabic Flagship students are eligible to receive need-based funding when it is most necessary – to support intensive domestic summer study at an approved institution (such as the University of Maryland Summer Language Institute), and for immersion studies overseas both summer and Capstone year. 

In order to apply for funding through the Flagship Program, students must demonstrate that they have actively pursued other scholarship opportunities. 

The Flagship Program works closely with the School of Languages, Literatures and Cultures (SLLC), the Office of Student Financial Aid, and the National Scholarships Office on campus to help students research scholarships and create outstanding applications. 

Students meet with the Arabic Flagship Staff on a regular basis to discuss their financial planning for study abroad and scholarship options.

UMD Boren Scholarship Award Winners: Boren Scholarships, an initiative of the National Security Education Program, are highly competitive and prestigious awards which provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate students to study less commonly taught languages in world regions critical to U.S. interests, and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central, and Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. 

UMD has ranked first in the nation in Boren Scholarships since 2012, and Arabic Flagship Program students are very competitive for these awards. In 2015, 2016, and 2017, all of our students in their Capstone year were Boren scholars.

UM and The Language Flagship partner to provide extensive funding to Arabic Flagship students for all study abroad experiences. Students are also encouraged to apply for additional scholarships from outside sources.  Funding from The Language Flagship is not guaranteed and is based on annual funding availability.  

Other Funding Opportunities:

Honors Fellowships 

  • Exclusively for Honors College students 
  • Awards typically range from $1,500 to $3,000 but may reach $5,000. 
  • Applications are typically due in April. 

Boren Awards 

  • Merit-based award up to $25,000 for a year-long study abroad program with a one-year federal service requirement 
  • For students interested in government service in the security sector 
  • Flagship students must be sure to indicate their status as a Flagship applicant. Read more about the Boren Flagship Scholarship. 
  • Applications are typically due in February. 

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship 

  • Need-based award of up to $8,000 for critical-need language study abroad programs of at least three weeks 
  • For students who are eligible for the Pell grant 
  • Applications are typically due in March. 

Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) 

  • Merit-based scholarship for the full cost of attendance of CLS summer Arabic program in one of four locations: Amman, Jordan; Meknes, Morocco; Tangier, Morocco; or Ibri, Oman 
  • Applications are typically due in November.

Funding from The Language Flagship allows the AFP to offer merit-based funding for scholars who have demonstrated the necessary aptitude and motivation for learning Arabic. 

Scholars are eligible for funding to support one of the following programs: 

  • The Arabic Summer Institute at the University of Texas 
  • The Arabic Overseas Flagship (AOF) approved summer programs 
  • The AOF "Capstone year" in Meknes, Morocco 
  • In-state tuition waivers for non-resident students to attend the University of Texas
